In Brussels, we welcome green meetings...

Not many people realise that Brussels is one of the greenest cities in the world, in fact second only to Washington. We have the highest ratio of green space per inhabitant of any city in Europe with all our many parks and gardens, and not forgetting the green belt formed by the Fôret de Soignes to the south east....the green lungs of Brussels.

Brussels is also home to Renewable Energy House, a joint venture of the EREC (European Renewable Energy Council), an umbrella organisation for 12 European associations which actively represent the entire renewable energy sector. The house in the European quarter is a showcase for ’renewables’ in a 120 year old building featuring solar thermal heating & cooling, a ’pellet’ heating system, the latest technology for electricity generation... www.erec.org

On the meetings side there are two important aspects. Firstly, the many new and renovated venues coming on stream in Brussels have taken sustainability issues very seriously. AA Dock’s the high-tech event centre in Anderlecht is one of them and this is where we’ll be holding our Brussels Awards Ceremony on Friday. www.aadocks.be

The Brussels-Capital Region has created a special new label for Eco-Dynamic Companies, designed to highlight venues which run environmentally-friendly events. 14 major companies in the meetings industry already meet these greener standards and more are in the pipeline. www.brusselsenvironment.be

And secondly, as we say in the headline, we welcome green meetings & events. In 2007 Brussels hosted the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and in 2008 the 4th Annual Brussels Climate Change Conference. Later this month the European Business Summit 2009 will bring Europe’s leaders together in Brussels for its Dare & Care conference in which one of the three major themes is ’greening’.

Despite the current economic crisis, sustainability continues to be a major issue for our industry. So watch this space over the next year.....
